Ball shut-off valves are used to isolate a section of piping.
This allows for maintenance on a component (pump, heater, etc.) without having to drain your spa.
They also enable the opening/closing of a circuit to modify water flow (very useful for creating a drain circuit, for example).

Turn the handle a quarter turn to open or close the ball valve.
