Ball valves allow isolating a section of piping.
This enables maintenance on a component (pump, heater, etc.) without the need to drain your spa.
They also allow closing/opening a circuit to modify water flow (very useful for creating a drain circuit, for example).

Turn the handle a quarter turn to open or close the ball valve.
